This week’s releases - Avenged Sevenfold: Nightmare, Ivoryline: Vessels

Avenged Sevenfold releases this album after the death of their drummer, The Rev. Filling in on the recording is ‘Dream Theater’ drummer, Mike Portnoy. This release has the consistent sound from the band’s recent years, but also gives the dark perspective on the band’s recent history. Lyrically, they tap into their feelings and struggles from this past year, creating some of the most haunting moments in their careers.

Ivoryline releases ‘Vessels’ this week, a follow-up to their last album, ‘There Came a Lion’. After a couple listens, this album stays true to the pop/rock sound they have been producing. They continue right where they left off with catchy riffs and lyrics. Easily some of their best choruses and song structure. Embedded throughout the album they expand their sound into new territory without compromising their sound.

Playing only about 6 songs, Dream Theater did the best they could with what they were given. Due to being an opening act, the crowds were still filing in, which caused for a less than stellar crowd experience for the band. Toward the end of the set, the crowd realized they were witnessing greatness. The majority of concert-goers were there to see Iron Maiden. It was a rough crowd, but DT pushed through it, putting on an excellent show. In the blazing heat, late afternoon, Dream Theater brought their expertise to each note. James Labrie, the singer, has his ups and downs and this show was closer to the ups. I wouldn’t say its his best performance I have heard, but it was pretty damn good. The rest of the band put on a clinic as they do every show. Hopefully next time, the NJ crowds will do them justice!

They will blow you away. In the intimate setting of the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ, we saw musicianship at first hand. Not only does Thrice take their music to the next level on their albums, but they carry over the essence of their recordings to the stage. Listening to their albums is an experience in itself, but seeing them perform the songs live is a must. They are one of the best performers in the scene today. They put forth the heart and soul of their albums times ten! Its an experience you can’t receive from their discs. Take it from me, go out and see them live and you will be in for a treat.

The band cited reasons being that the venues were not best fit for their show. The venues were minus the ability to have mosh pits and such, so a cancellation was in order. With their newest cd, Gold Cobra, coming sometime soon, they will be rescheduling the tour most likely until after the album release date. We’ll see...
